Directions: From US 2 in Iron River, turn south at McDonald's. Go up Stambaugh Hill to the former city of Stambaugh. Immediately at the top of the hill at the Stambaugh Post Office building, turn left (east) on Amber Street. Go three blocks to the stop sign at Stambaugh Avenue. Turn right (south) on Stambaugh Avenue for 11 blocks where you will see the cemetery on the right. |
Records: This cemetery is primarily a burial place for residents of Stambaugh, Caspian, Gaastra, and Stambaugh Township. It is managed by the Stambaugh Cemetery Association with offices in the Caspian City Hall. The part time clerk can be reached at (906) 265-3146. What you find here is a combination of the records from the clerk and information gathered after carefully inspecting each headstone. |
History: The village of Stambaugh was platted in 1882 at the top of Stambaugh Hill and was later incorporated as a city in 1923. Information from the Stambaugh centennial book which was published in 1982 says that all early burials were made in the Iron River Cemetery until 1905 when the Stambaugh Cemetery was established through the joint efforts of the Village and Township. The oldest burial found was made in 1901, and several 1904 burials also took place. Property is owned on M-189 near the Stambaugh Township Hall which will in the future when the current cemetery is full. |
