History: The Iron River area was first settled in the 1880s, with early burials made in the old Iron River Cemetery. Initial plans for a township cemetery were first developed in 1923. In 1924 the newly-formed Cemetery Board offered a $5 gold prize in a contest to name the cemetery, and over 700 names were submitted by schoolchildren, with the winning name being submitted by Iron River High School student Merle Barber, whose parents are buried in the cemetery. Land for the cemetery was originally the 37-acre Nelson Fisher Farm. E. L. Lang was the engineer in charge of the project, and an architect designed the total layout, including a plan for every tree on the property. In 1925 an order was placed for 164 trees. In 1927 the American Legion Post planned a soldier's plot, making Resthaven the only cemetery on the west side of the county where veterans have a separate burial location. The mausoleum was also built in the 1920s. |
Death Dates: Death dates have been recorded at the cemetery in an unusual way. The date may be the date of the burial, the date the body was received at the cemetery prior to burial, or the actual date of death. Because of the uncertainty of the date, all "death dates" which are not absolutely known to be the actual death date have been marked on this record as "bur", indicating a possible burial date. |
Internet: At www.findagrave.com, an entry for each person buried with a headstone is found, with biographical information about the person. |
Please contact me if your own family has someone buried in this cemetery that is not shown on these records, and perhaps the records with the city can be corrected.
